{"id":13,"date":"2020-04-24T17:36:36","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T16:36:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hcibook.net\/dc-bcshci2020\/?page_id=13"},"modified":"2020-05-15T12:13:20","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T11:13:20","slug":"submissions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hcibook.net\/dc-bcshci2020\/submissions\/","title":{"rendered":"Submissions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Please submit your proposal through the BCS HCI 2020 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"EasyChair submission system (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/easychair.org\/conferences\/?conf=bcshci2020\" target=\"_blank\">EasyChair submission system<\/a> \u2013 on the &#8220;Select a Track&#8221; page choose the option &#8220;BCS HCI 2020 Doctoral Symposium (6th July)&#8221;.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-accent-background-color\"><strong>Submission deadline: <\/strong>Monday 15th June 2020 (midnight)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your submission should be 4 pages (+references) and should include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your topic and your motivations for pursuing it<\/li><li>Your current stage in your PhD programme<\/li><li>Why you believe that attendance at the DC will benefit\nyou<\/li><li>How you feel you could contribute to the other\nparticipants <\/li><li>Useful resources and open questions<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This should be structured as outlined below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selection will be based on creating a diverse group of participants at different stages of their work, who can learn from each other and the expert panel.&nbsp; Do not feel you have to oversell your work: be honest about successes, problems and experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will also ask you to create some materials to help promote your work on social media and other ways. This will include a short video\/podcast (or similar) and a twitter-length summary of your PhD (yes 3 years work in twenty words), but you don&#8217;t need to worry about this for your submission; we will help you create these either in a pre-DC session or at the Doctoral Consortium itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Structure of submission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#aa0033\" class=\"has-text-color has-drop-cap\">A <strong>about your research<\/strong> (2 pages + references)<br> <em>(public: will be published on DC website)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>include 100 word abstract<\/li><li>keywords<\/li><li>describe your research area <\/li><li>references do not count towards the 2 page limit<\/li><li>see <a href=\"https:\/\/hcibook.net\/dc-bcshci2020\/resources\/top-and-tail\/\">additional guidance<\/a> about writing good abstract, etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-drop-cap has-accent-color\">B <strong>why you are applying<\/strong> for the DC (1 page)<br> <em>(only read by selection committee and other participants)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>where you are in your research journey (e.g.\nfinal year of full time PhD, 3 years into part-time PhD expecting to complete\nin a further 2 years)<\/li><li>how you got there (e.g. straight from\nundergraduate degree, came back into academia after 7 years in industry)<\/li><li>why you hope to benefit from the doctoral\nconsortium (e.g. expert help, connecting with others at similar stage)<\/li><li>what you hope to be able to offer to others\n(don&#8217;t fret too much about this especially if you are early on, but do try to\nthink about this as a two way process)<\/li><li>greatest successes to date and any barriers to\nprogress<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-drop-cap has-accent-color\">C <strong>useful resources<\/strong> and <strong>open questions<\/strong> (1 page)<br> <em>(public: will be used to help shape the event)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>what resources have helped you so far? (2 or 3\nresources, but feel free to include links to longer list)&nbsp; This might be books, articles, podcasts,\netc.&nbsp; Try to think of one that is more\ngeneral to PhD students within HCI broadly and one more specific to your topic\narea.<\/li><li>what questions do you have for established\nexperts in HCI?
